They add character to a building, but to keep them working effectively and to give you the maximum possible lifespan they need care and maintenance. Sash windows should open with light, even pressure. If you must use excessive force to open the window, then it is time to consider using some of our tips below to bring them back to full health.
Painting:
In cold wet weather the wood can swell slightly making windows difficult to open and close. Regular painting prevents the damp getting into the timber. Bear in mind that if the paint is too thick this can also cause the windows to stick. If the existing paintwork is in poor condition with cracking and large flaking areas, stripping the paint off back to the bare wood will give the best results.
Sticking Windows:
Sash Windows should glide smoothly up and down. Paint that has got into the runners can stick the window in place or make movement difficult. To keep the window sliding smoothly use a silicone based spray or beeswax polish on the frame, and moving parts.
Draught Proofing:
Weather stripping and other seals can keep sash windows airtight and rattle free, but does need to be checked and replaced regularly as it will suffer if the window is opened and closed often. Wood itself is a good natural insulator so as long as it is kept in good condition it should be keep the cold out efficiently.
